Beethoven
and His Contemporaries Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM This
concert presents three very different facets of Beethoven's work played
on
instruments like those of his time. Ian Watson leads a
Beethovenian
orchestra in the masterful Piano Concerto
No. 4 and in the Symphony No. 1, a
work imbued with the composer’s wit and great sense of drama. Monica
Jakuc
Leverett will be soloist in the concerto, playing a 5 ½-octave
fortepiano
modeled on those of Beethoven’s time. She and tenor Peter W. Shea will
perform
Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte (To the
Distant Beloved), widely
considered to be the first true song cycle. please

Monteverdi's Vespers (1610) is now established as
a treasure of
the choral repertoire and has been one of Arcadia's greatest successes
in recent years. The vespers are built around Biblical texts
traditionally used in the liturgy for several celebrations of Mary in
the Roman Catholic Church. The work calls for many different groups of
singers and instrumentalists, performing both antiphonally and
together. The spatial possibilities of St. Mary's in Northampton and
Christ Church Cathedral in Springfield are explored in Arcadia's
dramatic performance.

directed by Ian Watson
In this season Arcadia commemorates the 250th anniversary
of Handel's death with two major works. Handel composed Acis and
Galatea as
a masque in the summer of 1718. He set a libretto by John Gay,
Alexander Pope and John Hughes. In 1732 Handel expanded
the work to three acts and presented the revised Acis in
London as an ode. It is not clear whether the original performances
were staged, semi-staged or performed in concert. Arcadia will present
a concert version. Acis was presented during Arcadia Players’ first
season and returns as the ensemble celebrates its 20th.

We present Handel’s magnificent Biblical epic Israel
in
Egypt
as part of the
commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death. The work
was premiered at the King's Theatre,
Haymarket, in 1739. The libretto, compiled by Handel's collaborator
Charles Jennens, is composed entirely of selected passages from the
Hebrew Bible, mainly from Exodus and the Psalms. Although not well
received at its first performance, the piece vied with Messiah in
popularity during the 19th century and is now part of the core
repertoire of virtuoso choral groups. Note change of date and
venue.
